1st February 2019

Busting the myths behind your favorite glow-boosting step: facial exfoliation.

  2. Manual exfoliators are always too rough.
  3. You shouldn’t exfoliate daily.
  4. Exfoliation is only for oily skin.

Answers: False, False, False, False

We all love to get a good glow on. From radiance-boosting acid toners to fruit enzyme peels, the importance of facial exfoliation is a well-known fact. But there’s a lot of scaremongering that goes on out there in the skincare world, especially when it comes to scrubs and manual exfoliation. So, we’ve decided to take a closer look, with a little help from ELEMIS’ line-up of scrubs, peels and the NEW Superfood Blackcurrant Jelly Exfoliator.

“You can’t exfoliate if you have sensitive skin.”

While it’s true, sensitive skin can be tricky to care for and often requires special care when it comes to new products and resurfacing practices, exfoliation is ideal for breaking down surface build up and dead skin cells on all skin types. “Pay close attention to how your sensitive skin reacts to new products, and stick to soothing manual exfoliators like our Gentle Rose Exfoliator or softening enzyme treatments like those within the Dynamic Resurfacing range,” says Noella Gabriel, ELEMIS’ President and Co-Founder.

Manual exfoliators are always too rough.”

There are two types of exfoliants: manual and chemical. Manual facial exfoliators usually contain fruit particles, biodegradable beads or sugars that require a little scrubbing and rubbing to help slough away dead skin cells for instant gratification. Chemical exfoliants contain ingredients like acids and enzymes that when applied, break down dead skin cells more gradually. Both methods vary in benefits, but as long as you aren’t scrubbing too hard or fast, manual exfoliation is nothing to be afraid of. Our NEW Superfood Blackcurrant Jelly Exfoliator uses sustainably-sourced Blackcurrant particles in a beautiful Glycerine base to help you achieve that fresh, vibrant glow in minutes. Simply apply to damp, cleansed skin (it’s great to do in the shower!) and massage in gentle circular motions, then remove with a damp, dark cloth.

NOELLA KNOWS

“In need of something stronger? Add a little warm water to your Superfood Blackcurrant Jelly Exfoliator and watch as it transforms to a milky, scrub-like texture.”

 “You shouldn’t exfoliate daily.”

Scrubbers rejoice! While you may have heard exfoliation is a once weekly treat, products like our Superfood jelly and Gentle Rose scrub are delicate enough to be used daily. More into chemical treatment? Try the Dynamic Resurfacing Facial Pads in the AM and PM to help encourage your skin’s natural process of renewal.

“Exfoliation is only for oily skin.”

Jam-packed with antioxidant-rich fruit extracts like Nordic Bilberry and Black Tea, a prebiotic to balance stressed skin and a Glycerin base to hydrate and soften, our Superfood jelly mask has all skin bases covered. When it comes to choosing the right exfoliator for you, look out for the natural ingredients your skin loves. Our Papaya Enzyme Peel has a cream-like texture ideal for a more sensitive or dry complexions.
