“My grandmother could see a photo of a dress and then sew something fabulous. She had amazing style… dresses and matching coats, swimsuits, all of it. And she made everything herself. She was incredibly talented.”
Alice Stone is the founder of it-girl-chic fashion brand Lily and Lionel. “Fashion is in my blood. The company is named after my maternal grandparents. My grandfather also worked in the industry. He worked for all the major department stores, checking that every single detail was in place, even the buttons.”
Her parents have been working with textiles for over 30 years, so it’s no surprise that Alice is expanding on the foundation of the fashion legacy from generations past. We knew she was the perfect person to design two exclusive new prints for ELEMIS.
ELEMIS: Can you explain how our collaboration came about?
Alice: First of all, I’ve loved ELEMIS forever. I started using Frangipani Monoi Body Oil since I was 16. The aroma triggers so many memories for me. It reminds me of being on holiday. I’ve never stopped using it. It’s my go-to body oil. So, I’ve had a partnership in the back of my mind for a long time. About a year ago, the New York team reached out. It’s a perfect fit, because Lily and Lionel shares so many similarities with ELEMIS. We’re both about integrity and authenticity. We’re both about accessible luxury… we don’t intimidate our customer. We’re for all women – women of all ages, shapes, sizes.
ELEMIS: The print for the women’s gift with purchase and the luxury travel case use the same print. What inspired the print?
Alice: I was on a a city research trip and saw this 85-year-old woman with a very cool scarf/kimono thing. I took a photo of her from super far away. The scarf was kind of wafting as she walked away. It was such a funny moment. So, I created this conversational kind of doodle.
ELEMIS: It seems almost rock and roll in a way.
Alice: It does. Very much. It’s a bit energetic with the lips. The 1970’s were a huge source of inspiration for this print. Studio 54. There were all these iconic, super strong women then, and their energy is infused in the print. If this print were a person it would jump off the page and just start talking to you. It’s free-spirited, but classic.
ELEMIS: Tell us about the print on the men’s travel case.
Alice: I wanted the design elements of the men’s and women’s prints to live together in the collection. I focused on geometric shapes. I kept it simple to be appealing to men. It’s very clean, very sharp and modern, with clean lines.
ELEMIS: Describe your design aesthetic in 3 words?
Alice: Conversational, feminine, bohemian – and polished as well. That’s four! Oh, well.
ELEMIS: Ah, that’s alright! Lastly, which are your favorite ELEMIS products?
Alice: Of course, I already mentioned the Frangipani Oil. I love your candles. They smell fantastic, and they are so calming.
Also, I’m such a bath person. At the end of a long day, I love to pour in Skin Nourishing Milk Bath. I love the aroma. It’s so soothing. The smell makes me feel like I’m getting looked after. I get transported… dim the lights, and I could be anywhere… it takes me off. I love how natural it is, no nasties.
White Flowers Eye & Lip Make-Up Remover is also lovely. The small one is great, because it travels so well. It’s hard to get the eye makeup off, but that product clears it off right away.
I’m also loving the the Superfood range. It feels like the best green juice, but for your face. I love the consistency -- so creamy.
