Party season's new make-up rules...
Glitter make-up may be something that most of us left behind in our teens, yet thanks to some of the world’s top catwalk artists, all things shimmery, shiny and sparkly are staging a comeback this party season. Sophisticated, suitably festive – and tailor made for grown-ups, here’s three catwalk-inspired looks that glitter in the spotlight. Because if you can’t go all-out during the holidays, when can you do it?
Now all you need is a new little black dress and your dancing shoes…
1. The disco eye
This is party season’s answer to the traditional smoky eye – and it requires a few professional tricks to pull it off. First, create your base color by applying eye shadow over the lid, extending it a little at the outer corner and running it along the lower lash line. Then pat lip balm over the top. Cut a cotton wool pad in half and use some of the balm to stick it to the skin in a half moon shape beneath each eye to catch any falling glitter. Use your middle finger to tap glitter all over the lid. The key to keeping this modern and sophisticated is to stick to the same shade families when choosing your shadow and glitter color (think greys and silvers or golds and bronzes) – and keep the rest of the face neutral.
2. The shine line
Understated yet more graphic, all you’ll need to do to achieve this look is to select a glitter eye liner, (bronze will emphasize blue or grey eyes, silver is great with brown or green eyes) and run it along either the top or the bottom lash lines, extending it out into a cat’s flick if you wish. The key here is either/or – both can appear too glittery – as if you’re reliving those teenage years. Feel free to accessorize this look with a bold red or pink lip.
3. The cheek dapple
By no means one for those who like to take a “less is more” approach, the Burberry AW16 show nevertheless proved that a delicate smattering of glitter over the upper cheeks can look incredibly beautiful. First, line the entire rim of your eyes in black or brown to create definition. Then pat a liquid illuminator onto the tops of cheekbones, trailing it up to the outer corner of each eye. While it’s still wet, pat glitter over the top to give the effect that a trail of stars is gently twinkling over your face, bringing your cheekbones right into the limelight. Be sure to define and fill in your brows to balance out your facial features – then simply pat clear lip balm onto your lips to maintain a chic, grown-up effect overall.
