Exfoliation is key to skin health but how often should you do it, how, when and why?
Therapist Supervisor at The House of ELEMIS, Hannah Barnes, answers your most common questions about exfoliation – so you can get the most from your skincare routine, starting today….
What does skin exfoliation actually mean? Exfoliation is the process whereby dead cells are removed from the surface of the skin.
What are the benefits? Exfoliation is an essential part of any effective skincare routine. It will reveal a brighter complexion and help your other products be absorbed more effectively.
Is it suitable for all skin types? Yes. However, it’s important to take into account the characteristics of your complexion and choose an exfoliator specifically for your skin type.
Even if I've got super sensitive skin? Yes, you can still exfoliate even if you have very sensitive skin. Papaya Enzyme Peel is a great option for exfoliation as you apply it like a mask and the enzymes do all the work, nibbling away the dead skin cells.
Are there any occasions when I shouldn’t exfoliate? You should exfoliate throughout the seasons, but a more hydrating, less abrasive exfoliator will be kinder to the skin during the colder months – so try our Gentle Rose Exfoliator. If you’re undergoing any intense resurfacing treatments, like peels, we don’t recommend you use additional exfoliators. However, this doesn’t include products from our Dynamic Resurfacing System which utilizes the gentle power of enzymes to exfoliate – so feel free to use the Dynamic Resurfacing Gel Mask twice a week for a less abrasive approach.
How do I do it? All skin types are different, so you need to choose an exfoliator that will suit you as an individual. If you come to the House of ELEMIS, we’ll perform a skin analysis to help you decide. As a general guide, if you have a typically oily skin, using a slightly more abrasive exfoliator, like our Skin Buff will help rebalance it. For a dry or mature skin, I would try and hunt out a more hydrating gel based exfoliator. If you suffer from a sensitive skin, look for either an enzyme-based exfoliator that removes the dead cells without requiring abrasive particles.
How often should I exfoliate? It differs for everyone, but professionally, we usually recommend 1-2 times a week.
What products should I apply afterwards to maximize the benefits? Create your own home spa night once a week and use it as an opportunity to apply your exfoliator. Then use a face mask that suits your skin type. Having cleared the dead skin cells away, your mask will work 10 times better than usual! When you’re short of time in the morning, exfoliate then apply serum and/or moisturizer.
