We managed to get five minutes with Sam and Gemma from This Is Mothership, the British blog for busy new moms who want to catch up on all things fashion, beauty and baby in one place. With Sam’s experience as a beauty editor and Gemma’s as a stylist, they are more than equipped to keep us up to date on all the latest. We asked them about their skincare tips and fashion essentials for new mothers everywhere.
How has your beauty regimen changed since becoming a mother?
Neither of us has a lot of time to dedicate to a committed skincare regime these days despite our skin looking much greyer, duller, and having more dark circles. Plus, we've both noticed that we have drier skin - definitely a result of lack of sleep. We need products that work and give great results - quickly!
We hear you’re fans of ELEMIS BIOTEC. What’s your favorite ELEMIS product?
Gemma loves the BIOTEC Skin Energising Cleanser. She's been a face-wipe girl for the last 15 years, but Sam put a stop to that, explaining how bad they were for her skin, and introducing her to BIOTEC. She hasn't looked back! Because it’s a foaming face wash, it’s really easy to use. It smells amazing and makes skin so soft.
Sam is obsessed with Pro-Collagen Marine Cream. She goes through pots of it. Nothing else makes her skin feel so soft and plump. And it smells like a dream. The perfect antidote to perk up a "knackered mum" face.
If you could give 3 tips to time-starved moms who want to look and feel on-trend, what would they be?
- A well-fitting pair of jeans is super flattering and the staple of every mom uniform, so it's important to get them right. Once you find a great pair, buy two.
- Give yourself one evening a week for a little "me time." Do a face mask, put on some fake tan or just take a bath.
- ASOS Premier and Amazon Prime. With these two apps there is nothing that you can't order for the next day, be it a new lipstick or pair of shoes.
What 3 beauty products do you always have in your handbags?
We always have a hand cream. We never used to bother, but since becoming moms and doing so much washing up, we always have dry hands. So it’s vital to keep the skin hydrated. We are both obsessed by lip balms - you can find at least three in Sam’s bag. And of course, a red lipstick. That’s our best mom face trick. A slick of red on the lips detracts from tired eyes.
For the kids we both have a Mary Poppins-esque bag full of snacks, extra clothes and random plastic objects - (mainly cars, ducks and Ikea bag clips) - to keep them entertained at all times.
When you do get 5 minutes of peace, what do you do to treat yourself and help you feel calm and in control?
We fake tan. There is nothing that makes us feel more confident and look more awake than a faux glow.
