Like most, I’ve been waiting for summer to arrive for what feels like forever. But while most of us are loving the fact we can finally leave the house without a huge winter coat on, our skin is just beginning its struggle through its hardest season of the year.
Summer not only means soaring heat, but blasting AC too. Extremes in temperature play havoc with our poor skin and so it’s not just sun damage it needs protecting from. I’ve created the perfect summer-skin routine to make your skins (and your) life as easy as possible.
Repair is as important as protection
Repairing skin is often something we forget about in summer. SPF demands most of our attention (as it should), but there is enough room for more love in our skincare heart. ELEMIS have created an easy, one-stop night treatment. Super lightweight you won’t even feel it on skin, Peptide⁴ Night Recovery Cream-Oil works with skins natural renewal process (when skin cell repair is at its peak) to counteract damage. Packed with Night Scented Stock Oil (a breakthrough new oil for cosmetics), it contains 10x the amount of vitamin E than any other oil, which helps the skin’s moisture barrier retain water. This is particularly important at night when skin is at its most active and so loosing high water content.
Moisturizing for all temperatures
The main difference I noticed since moving to the US is AC is everywhere. Literally, everywhere. We don’t have as much need of it back home as it doesn’t get hot enough, but stateside it’s cranked up to freezing and an icy breeze saps moisture out of the air. I can feel it in my eyes as my contact lenses dry up so think what it’s doing to skin. That said, moisturizers can often feel too sticky in hot weather so I’d recommend Pro-Collagen Marine Cream. It’s gel-like texture makes it comfortable in humidity but don’t let the lightweight formula fool you. Packed with antioxidants and marine algae it packs a punch in the moisture department from cellular level to the surface of skin.
While I recommend wearing SPF every day, it’s especially important in summer. Even if it’s cloudy, UVA rays can penetrate dense fog and even the reflection of the rays have been proven to be powerful enough to damage skin. Therefore, it’s so important to pick an SPF that has broad spectrum protection from both UVA (the aging ones) and UVB (the burning ones) rays.
SPF’s have heavier molecules so you need a cleanser that breaks it down at night without stripping skin. Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm is up to the job plus it contains Elderberry Oil (an antioxidant) which helps aging toxins from sun damage.
