This week, we’re stepping things up a notch and revealing how to super-charge your cleansing routine. Double cleansing is, simply put, a method of cleansing the skin twice. While at first it may sound excessive, the benefits of this modern skincare trick are manifold.
If you’re wearing a full face of make-up or a dense SPF formula during the day, it’s likely a single cleanse won’t leave the skin thoroughly clean. The aim of the first cleanse is to remove all traces of make-up, while the second fully treats the skin.
Secondly, in today’s environment, pollution plays a significant part in the health of our skin. If you live in an especially congested city, a double cleanse is vital to ensure all damaging free radicals are thoroughly removed from the skin.
And finally, a thorough double cleanse will leave the skin thoroughly prepped to absorb any products that follow, effectively increasing the efficacy of your entire skincare routine. Makes sense, no?
Ready to master the double cleanse? Read on for our essential tips...
Tip 1. Choose your cleanser wisely.
While using the same cleanser twice still counts, the double-cleanse is a great opportunity to indulge in multiple textures and formulas.
If you’re wearing lashings of mascara, it’s likely an eye make-up remover or a micellar water will be your first cleanser – ELEMIS’s rosewater-infused Smart Cleanse Micellar Water is the ideal choice. Alternatively, rich cream formulas such as ELEMIS Gentle Foaming Facial Wash are equally ideal at this point. These dense, luxurious textures will melt seamlessly into dry skin, helping to dissolve any remaining traces of the day.
For your second cleanse, consider a soothing milk or lightweight gel to remove any water-based debris. With make-up and oil already removed, this is your chance to really treat the skin – a perfect time to perform the facial massage mastered in Week One.
Tip 2. Save it for evening.
Stick to a single cleanse in the morning, as your skin is already clean of make-up and SPF. The double cleanse isn’t necessary in the AM, but makes a decadent treat in the evening , when it’s likely you’ll have more time to enjoy the ritual too.
Tip 3. Add exfoliation.
If your skin is especially congested – think long days in the polluted city – then try this trick for maximising the effects of your double cleanse. Try blending a little granular exfoliator into your second cleanser, then massaging in gentle upward circles. You’ll reap the benefits of a deeper-than-deep cleanse, while simultaneously sloughing away any dull skin cells.
