The Benefits of Taking a Deep Breath

“It’s as natural as breathing,” or so the saying goes. But how naturally do you find yourself inhaling and exhaling?

As you read this you have probably started paying more attention and noticing that your breathing is quite shallow. You may be hunched over a desk or crammed in a commuter train, maybe you’re lying on your bed relaxing but have realised that actually, your chest doesn’t feel very open.

Breathing – really breathing – is key to our bodies functioning properly. From digestion to detoxification, without oxygen, our cells just can’t do their job to the best of their ability, and that includes skin cells. When we breathe fully, the diaphragm lowers into the belly allowing the lungs to expand and fill. Within the lungs, oxygen is replaced in deoxygenated blood, which is then re-distributed throughout the body supporting all vital processes.

When you’re stressed or tired, breathing deeply is the best thing you can do to help you feel calmer as shorter breaths will activate the fight or flight response, creating stress in the body. Noella Gabriel, Creator of ELEMIS Therapies and Co-Founder, has a simple breathing exercise to help you slow and deepen your breathing. Try this in the morning before you get ready or in the evening when you get home to feel more grounded and connected. Or indeed, whenever you need to take a deep breath.

Step 1: Sit in a chair with feet firmly on the floor, and hands on your knees, palms facing up.

Step 2: Push your lower back into the chair so you really take the shape of what you're sitting on.

Step 3: Close your eyes, taking your awareness down to the base of the spine – visualise breathing into the base of the spine.

Step 4: Let the breath take over - imagine you're breathing in through the soles of your feet.

Step 5: Slowly move the breath up from the soles of the feet, to your calves, thighs, spine, neck, up behind the eyes and out through the crown of your head. Immediately when you do this, you will notice your body elongating and softening as you exhale.
