How to feel great on winter mornings…

The clocks are going back on Sunday, signaling a time of year many of us dread: waking up in the dark, getting home in the dark, and barely finding 10 minutes to catch a quick dose of light during lunch. So it’s easy to wake up feeling a bit miserable at the prospect of another sunless day and fail to summon the motivation to get up. Plus, in our defence, scientists now believe that being a “morning person” is predetermined by our genes - some of us are natural larks while some of us are more owl-like in our behaviours. If you’re feeling like you may be more of an owl disposition, then here are our top tips to cultivate a brighter state of mind on winter mornings...

Try some classics: What’s the first thing you hear when you wake up? A grating mobile phone ringtone? A blaring pop song from your clock radio? Each of the above tend to jerk us brutally from our slumber, making our heart beat faster and inducing feelings of shock, panic and dread. So why not download the Alarm Clock Sleep Sounds app (free from iTunes) and wake up to the gently reviving sounds of birdsong or running water, perhaps? You could even set your radio alarm to a classical station to get a calmer kind of wake-up call entirely.

Get creative with colours: Research shows that the colours we surround ourselves with actually affect the chemicals released by the brain, which in turn has an impact on how we feel emotionally and physically. So add colourful accents to your bedroom via cushions, pictures, throws, and lampshades: yellow for optimism; orange for a comforting sense of connection; green for a sense of regeneration and balance; and blue for calm.

Prepare for positivity: When the alarm sounds and your eyes peel reluctantly open, it’s easy to let worries and troublesome tasks circle relentlessly around your mind. Within minutes, you can find yourself in a state of complete anxiety. To counteract the curse of worries, before going to sleep, write down anything you need to do the next day so it’s not whirring around your brain with the fear that you might forget. Then when the alarm goes off, get straight up and put the light on so you can’t stew on anything and once fully awake check your to-do list feeling positive that you’ll check every item off.

Be guided by your senses: Sometimes all it takes to feel happier is to simply let our senses guide our subconscious. Invigorating scents such as citrus, mint and rosemary all work to energise our bodies and focus our minds. So get an uplifting citrus perfume, pour hot water over a sprig of fresh rosemary for an instant herbal tea, or make our Sharp Shower Body Wash (which contains both Peppermint and Spearmint) part of your morning routine.

Set your alarm clock earlier: As counterintuitive as this sounds, the anxious, irritable, and frazzled state most of us find ourselves in every morning, is often simply due to feeling rushed. So by setting your alarm clock 20 minutes earlier, you could give yourself time to have a calming cup of tea in the garden, listen to the radio for a while, have a bath or simply spend time talking to a loved one before you set out for your day.
