Kelly Cornwell’s expert guide to getting the perfect summer glow…
A radiant, sun-kissed glow that looks fresh from a sunny weekend in the South of France is something we all aspire to. Yet bronzer can behave like the temperamental child of beauty: sometimes too dry, sometimes too shimmery – sometimes too patchy or muddy looking.
Which is why we asked Kelly Cornwell - ELEMIS fan and celebrity make-up artist to Alicia Vikander and Suki Waterhouse - to reveal how she creates the perfect summer glow on her A-list clients.
Brushes to the ready…
The prep: I can’t stress enough how important this step is if you’re to avoid looking muddy or patchy. Create a perfectly smooth, even canvas by prepping the skin with a gentle scrub such as Dynamic Resurfacing Facial Wash, then apply the Dynamic Resurfacing Gel Mask to give it an extra glow.
The shade: You can afford to go up to two shades darker than your natural skin tone. Choose a bronzer without shimmer for the most natural result – you can always add a light-bouncing highlighter at the end to add radiance.
The texture: Gel is great for creating a seamless, natural look – especially as you can blend it down the neck and onto the body for an all-over effect. Powder is more of a finishing product that can be swept onto the cheeks, forehead, nose and chin – all the places where the sun would hit the face naturally. A liquid highlighter with a slight shimmer is great for accentuating the tops of cheekbones.
The zones: Suck in your cheeks and apply your gel bronzer into the hollows. Then blend it down the sides of the nose to create a slimming effect – and around the hairline to trick the eye into thinking your tan is completely natural. Add a pop of a pink cream blush to the centre of the cheeks to create a warm glow that looks like it comes from within.
The tools: If you’re using a gel texture, it’s best to use a brush with synthetic bristles. A natural bristle brush in a round shape is great for buffing on powder. Pick a flatter shape if you want to create a more defined contour.
The highlights: Highlights add a multi-dimensional effect that really makes the features pop. Pro-Radiance Illuminating Flash Balm is great for creating a subtle highlight. Use the palm of your hand to gently press it onto the tops of cheekbones and temples.
The finishing touches: Co-coordinating your eyes and lips is a great way to bring the whole look together. Apply a soft veil of your bronzing powder to your eyelids, then add some of the cream blusher you used on your cheeks to your lips to finish and perfect your radiant summer glow.
