One half of the duo behind the best-selling Beauty Bible series spills the beans on the products every woman should know about…
As long-term fans (and readers) of the amazing Beauty Bible series, we’re thrilled to say that five of our most popular products - including ELEMIS Pro-Collagen Oxygenating Night Cream, ELEMIS Advanced Brightening Even Tone Serum, ELEMIS Pro-Collagen Lifting Treatment Neck and Bust, ELEMIS Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm, and ELEMIS Pro-Collagen Advanced Eye Treatment – have recently entered their ultimate ‘hall of fame’.
So to celebrate, we asked authors, Jo and Sarah, to give us the scoop on the latest goings-on in the world of scent, skin, make-up and all-round wellbeing. Sarah will also be welcoming you to an exclusive book signing in The House of ELEMIS– so you can snap up your copy and meet her in person. More of which below…
Check back here next week for Jo’s fellow Beauty Bible author, Sarah Stacey as she reveals the inside secrets to a healthy, happy, stress-free life…
- Jo, you’ve tried and sniffed hundreds of scents…What’s your signature fragrance –the one that you always return to?
‘Guerlain Mitsouko. The master perfumer, Roja Dove introduced me to it when he was the trainer at Guerlain. A group of journalists spent a whole day exploring that collection, and this was the one I fell in love with. But I only wear it for six months a year: it goes away with my opaque tights in May and comes out again in mid-September, because it’s velvety and cocooning and spicily warm. And frankly too claustrophobic for summer!’
- What smell reminds you of childhood?
‘Tomato and geranium leaves, which my much-loved granny – known as ‘Lally’ – used to rub between my fingers in her greenhouse’.
- What’s your latest scent discovery?
‘I’ve fallen in love with Lyn Harris’s new Perfumer H perfumes and splashed out on a bottle of the delicious Oriental, Heliotrope. The hand-blown glass bottles are like nothing else out there’.
- What’s the best way to find one’s own signature scent?
‘I think it’s always a fantastic sign when other people ask what you’re wearing. But at The Perfume Society we’re seeing people move further and further from the idea of a ‘signature’ scent and instead have a wardrobe to match their mood (and what they’re wearing). I like the quote from Aerin Lauder, the granddaughter to the great Estée Lauder, that “you wouldn’t wear the same shoes with every outfit – so why would you wear the same fragrance…?’”
- What would we find in your make-up bag right now?
‘I’m unswervingly devoted to By Terry foundations and Terrybly Densiliss serum foundation is amazing. I blend it with Guerlain Baby Skin – a sort of face-illuminating primer – and it's brilliant for covering up red veins. I’m also using Guerlain Cils d’Enfer mascara, with a Tom Ford Cocoa Mirage palette for eyeshadow and Laura Mercier Tightline Cake Liner on my lash-line. I “disappear” without something on my brows, so for that I use Benefit Gimme Brow, which adds fibres as well as colouring the brows. I love Charlotte Tilbury’s Lipsticks and her Filmstar Bronze & Glow for shaping and illuminating’.
- What’s your desert island hair product…?
‘Ogario Restore and Shine Hair Masque (from a little-known Islington salon which makes all-natural products). I swear by it once a week and my hair’s always shiny (I think!)’
- What’s your beauty mantra?
‘I always tell women not to obsess over one “flaw” – lines, age spots, whatever – because when we look at someone we see the whole picture: voice, earrings, lipstick, lovely jacket. NOBODY else notices your “flaws”. So cut yourself some slack!’
- And your beauty guilty secret?
‘Um, is Green & Black’s Chocolate a beauty product…? I think so!’
- Do you follow an exercise regimen?
‘I walk wherever I can (usually lugging heavy bags!) and do at least one yoga class a week. I also sea-bathe in Hastings, near my house, for about seven months of the year. Add in gardening and that’s it, really. Not a fan of gyms, but so long as I keep up all of the above it seems to work!’
- What do you love most about ELEMIS?
‘You have products which harness science and the power of botanicals, but I also think it’s the pleasure factor of ELEMIS which encourages women to use them diligently. I actively look forward to time spent with products like ELEMIS Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm or the new ELEMIS Pro-Radiance Illuminating Eye Balm, which I LOVE. When a product is a pleasure to use and effective, that’s a joy’.
