TRAVEL SECRETS OF HIGH FLYING PROFESSIONALS

5 ways to beat jet lag on your winter holiday…

The clocks are going back, the days are getting shorter and frankly, we can’t get sunny winter holiday destinations off the brain. But to get sunshine in winter, you need to fly long and far. So here’s how to ensure jet lag never stops you enjoying your holiday…

1. Strategic seating: Unfortunately, most of us aren’t lucky enough to turn left when we board the plane. So if a roomier First or Business Class seat eludes you, a bit of strategic seat choosing will help you get some shut-eye during the flight. Pick a window seat so you can prop up your pillow, then go for the middle of the cabin – simultaneously avoiding the clanging of the catering area up front and the bumpiest part of the plane at the back.

2.The water trick: According to nutritional experts, adding apple juice to a humble plastic cup of water can increase cellular hydration levels. So order that juice and mix up a supercharged elixir of five parts water to one part apple.

3. Mind over matter: According to NASA fatigue management experts, it takes one day for your body to adjust to every hour in time difference between your departure and arrival destinations. As a result, if you’re only going for a few days, chances are your body won’t have time to adjust. So go with the flow – and relish the fact that you’ll slip back into your home routine more easily on return.

4. Switch movies for classical music: As tempting as it is to lock into hours and hours of films, the light from the screen catch actually act as a stimulant, preventing you from nodding off en route. University of Toronto scientists believe that works by Brahms, Handel, Mozart, Strauss and Bach include meditative patterns that slow brain waves and induce relaxation – so switch to your in-flight radio setting instead.

5. Get light savvy: To fast track your body into your new time zone, follow this basic principle: If you’re travelling west, get some sunlight upon arrival to shift your sleep phase back. Going east? Avoid sunlight and you’ll accelerate your body into its sleepy phase.

Now all you need is these must-haves by your side to kick start that holiday…
