Fairytale wedding flowers for your big day. What every bride should know…
Whether you’re getting married this year or are in the planning stages for next, you’ll know that flowers make the day. Although the venue tends to take centre stage and the dress steals all the limelight, it’s the flowers – from the bridal bouquet to the table centrepieces – that provide the fragrant backdrop and the finer details.
But how to make them beautiful, individual and utterly right for your day? Meet Anthony Marklew and Javier Salvador, founders of By Appointment Only Design. Bringing a knowledge of fashion design, theatricality and a dash of creative genius to their business, they are masters in their art at using flowers to weave a story around your day to make it extra special.
We took a petally pause with Anthony and Javier to reveal the secret to successful wedding flowers…
By Appointment Only: A guide to wedding flowers
- What should people consider when starting to think about their wedding flowers?
‘Knowing where to start is often a daunting process, we always ask our clients to write an absolute wish list of what they want then apply a budget of between 7%-15% of your total spend’.
- Where have you have drawn inspiration from in the past?
‘We look at the venue for inspiration, as it’s essential to take into account how the flowers will look in the room. We’re continually inspired by architecture and interiors and often decorate stairways, doorways or mantelpieces with extravagant floral installations to create something unusual’.
- If you could do the flowers for the wedding of any person in the world, who would it be?
‘Now that would be telling! We’ve been lucky enough to work with many celebrities, and royal families but every client gets the same treatment’.
- How do you give each and every wedding a little personal touch?
‘We always suggest three things: Flowers, scent and gifts. Invite less people and give them more. Edit your guest list and make sure they have the best time, instead of inviting everyone and the experience getting lost’.
- Can wedding flowers be used to tell a story at a wedding?
‘The way flowers are arranged will tell the story. In abundance for a luxurious feel, meadow flowers for the country look, succulents for the more modern bride…’
- What’s your top tip for creating wedding flowers that are classic – but have a little hint of quirkiness?
‘Always do things your way. Ask yourself what’s important for you and your partner and not because you saw it at someone else’s wedding! Also, choose flowers that are in season abundance will be at your favour! More is never enough!’
