The Power of Oils

30th August 2017

Often when I mention to my clients that they should be introducing a facial oil to their skincare routine, I'm bombarded with a variety of excuses as to why they can't use them.

The most common response is 'putting oils on my face brings me out in really bad breakouts'.

The Ancient Egyptians kept their skin vibrant and flawless with Moringa oil - a key ingredient in ELEMIS Cellular Recovery Bliss Capsules - and it's something that we really should be using to get that ultimate skin perfection we all strive for. As a therapist it's what I would recommend almost every time to really get to the bottom of what's causing the skin to misbehave.

The key is to recognise that not all facial oils are the same. At ELEMIS we have really ensured that all our oils are super lightweight. Actually, 96% of women who purchased our Superfood Facial Oil said that of all the products they had tried, this is the oil that they would repurchase, due to the ultra-light feeling and results like no other.

When introduced to your routine, oils can have so many benefits. Here are a few that I have noticed when prescribing to my clients.

1. They can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and hydrate the skin.

ELEMIS’ anti-ageing facial oils are packed with anti-oxidants to prevent further signs of ageing. Oils are the ideal way to target dehydrated skin that can be dry and flaky, as well as rosy cheeks. Due to their smaller molecular size, they can be much more effective at moisturising than your creams, as they treat the lower levels of the skin. For added hydration, you can apply an extra drop of oil over the top of your moisturiser to seal moisture into the skin.

Pro Collagen Marine Facial Oil has been formulated with a trio of seaweeds - Padina Pavonica, Golden Seaweed and Roaring Water Kelp - to deliver maximum hydration whilst reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. White Poppy Seed oil plumps the skin with moisture and leaves the complexion looking revitalised and radiant. I have to say, I've wondered how I've managed without this product before now. Tune in to QVC on September 17th to get yours in our Today's Special Value.

For loss of tone and elasticity, Pro Definition Facial Oil uses Raspberry Plant Stem Cell technology and Himalayan Gentian extract, which is proven to nourish and even the skin tone. Omega-rich Evening Primrose and organic Barbary Fig oil, high in essential fatty acids, support the skin’s lipid barrier to help lock in moisture for all-day hydration, leaving skin feeling regenerated and resilient. Fine lines appear reduced and skin appears toned and lifted.

2. They balance oily skin.

If your skin tends to be on the shiny side and you're nervous about trying oils, please try and think differently as they are actually the best way to regulate the amount of oil your skin is producing. The skin recognises an oil when applied to its surface, absorbing it into the deeper layers. If you are nervous, you can apply a tiny bit to the forehead, each cheek, nose, and chin at first and use it on its own, working up to using it under a moisturiser. You will even find yourself adding a drop of your new-found best friend to your weekly facial mask when you see just how effective they are.

3. They really protect your skin.

Because oils are lipophilic, they can penetrate deeper into the skin, trapping water and other moisturising goodness in while keeping toxins and other aggressors out. Some oils also help to fortify and strengthen our own natural skin barrier. This is especially important for people that work or live in the city and need extra protection against pollutants and smog - a known source of unwanted wrinkles. On a cold winter day, using a product with highly concentrated anti-oxidant ingredients would be a definite win-win.

4. They're the perfect primer for makeup.

Oils manage to absorb through the top of skin quickly and settle comfortably into the areas that need hydrating the most. This gives an immediate plumping effect and creates the perfect canvas for your makeup — and the smoother your skin, the better your whole face will look. Any of the ELEMIS oils you choose will deliver this - you can even add an extra drop to your favourite foundation or BB cream.

5. They can help shrink the appearance of enlarged pores.

Facial oils can also help to detox grime and fats from pores, making them appear smaller and less noticeable. For this reason they’re often the base of some of the best facial cleansers including Nourishing Omega Rich Cleansing Oil and Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm.

6. They can calm down rashes.

Many oils have anti-inflammatory properties as well, helping to soothe irritated skin. They’re fabulous for reducing redness from rosacea too.

7. They're great for treating breakouts.

Believe it or not, an oil is a very good way to treat unwanted breakout and please believe me when I say 'no, you won't get more breakouts if you use oils'. We aren't talking about slathering an oil that is not compatible with your skin all over your face - when the right oil is used in moderation it can actually reduce oil production, making a great addition to your topical spot-control products.

I hope now by reading some of the great benefits of introducing oils into your skincare routine you will see that they are not something to avoid, and that by embracing them you will get great results.
