A golden glowing tan may make you look healthier and feel good, but the sun can also dehydrate your skin and what’s more, too much sun can even cause long-term damage and increase the rate your skin is ageing.
So if you’re going to indulge in that two week dose of sun-worshipping this summer then here is what I would recommend to replenish sun-frazzled and thirsty skin for a youthfully repaired and more radiant complexion.
Sunlight boosts the production of melanin. You can start to increase those melanin levels by introducing your ELEMIS Tan Accelerator at least 2 weeks before you go away on holiday. It’s the pigment in your skin that makes it go brown and helps to prevent sun sensitivities like prickly heat. The epidermis (top layer of your skin) thickens to allow for these increased pigment levels so you have your own invisible overcoat of protection (you still need to apply a high SPF though). This beautiful lotion can not only be used as a tan accelerator but will double up as the perfect after-sun and moisturising body lotion as it contains Shea Butter, Macadamia Nut oil, Jojoba oil and Tyrosine. Tyrosine is an Amino Acid naturally present in the body and is used by skin cells to form melanin so the skin will have the most luminous glow after you have applied it and can be used on all the family. As a result of this production of melanin, the natural shedding of dead skin cells slows down too.
The next product you need to be taking on holiday and using when you’re back, is a good body exfoliating treatment as your skin will soon start to appear rough and dry. Use a separate facial scrub to prevent your complexion from looking dull and lacklustre. A favourite of mine to take away with me is Devils Mint Body Scrub as it gently cleanses and smoothes the body, whilst removing tired skin cells with Devils Apron Seaweed and Peppermint Essential Oil leaving the skin satin soft and more receptive to your moisturisers.
I would recommend Papaya Enzyme Peel for your face as your skin will be dehydrated from sun, and the enzymes responsible for the skin’s natural exfoliation processes won’t work so well so the Pineapple and Papaya enzymes in this peel will help stimulate your skin’s own enzyme action. A lot of my clients actually avoid exfoliating whilst on holiday and when they get back as they feel it will get rid of the tan they have spent ages developing. However, exfoliating can remove built-up layers of dead, rough, thickened, uneven surface skin cells that make skin look wrinkled and dry. Research also shows that exfoliation can increase collagen production and improve the structure of the skin’s outer layer.
Next it's time to pack an intense moisturising face cream so I would switch to Pro-Collagen Marine Cream Ultra-Rich. This is the perfect summer holiday moisturiser as it has been formulated to intensively nourish and moisturise dry and dehydrated skin. The powerful anti-ageing ingredients of Pro-Collagen Marine Cream Ultra-Rich have been shown to reduce the depth of wrinkles, improve skin firmness, tone and hydration in 14 days. The unique Mediterranean algae, Padina Pavonica, has been shown to support skin moisturisation, improving suppleness, firmness and elasticity. In addition, Ginkgo Biloba provides superior free-radical protection and has been blended with precious Rose and Mimosa Absolutes, creating the ultimate anti-ageing cream. It’s also the perfect holiday moisturiser because it can be used as both a day and night-time treatment and can be taken around the eye area too so no need for lots of products or to compromise on your skincare whilst you are away.
I would also suggest that you look for skin-identical products like Pro-Collagen Super Serum Elixir as it is power packed with Hylauronic Acid to deliver immediate hydration, and African Birch to synthesise the production of collagen both of which are substances that act in the same way as the natural components in skin that sun exposure attacks. They replenish and restore the skin‘s external barrier, making it soft and supple eliminating dryness.
