One of the most important steps to ensure your skin is performing - and to get the most out of your products - is exfoliating!

Exfoliation removes dead skin cells on the skin’s surface and aids absorption. Exfoliation can be performed manually, by using a manual scrub on the skin like ELEMIS Skin Buff, its phytoplankton spherical beads gently polish over the skin’s surface to deep cleanse and is perfect for combination/oily skin type and also (ladies, lock up your products!) men’s skin. Gentle Rose Exfoliator is heavenly when applied: the tiny Jojoba beads disperse pure Rose Oil leaving the skin with a blanket of hydration ideal for more sensitive skins, and can even use this over the lips and eye area.

Exfoliating can also be achieved by using scrubs that contain enzymes that dissolve and remove the dead skin cells without circular motion massage. Papaya Enzyme Peel is a personal favourite of mine, leaving the skin with a glass like feel and the best treatment for anyone with scarring or uneven skin texture and for those who don’t like to feel a pulling on the skin. This products does all the work and all you need to do is apply over the skin, avoiding eyes and lips, and leave to work for 10 minutes before rinsing off. When I want a more intense skin treatment I love to take equal amounts of both Skin Buff and Papaya Enzyme Peel and apply them together, the results are amazing!

As we get older the process of cell regeneration slows down.

This means that the body is slower to shed skin cells and generate new ones unlike when we were younger. If we want the youthful bloom back in our skin then we have to be exfoliating. When old skin cells start to pile up on the surface of the skin, it can leave skin feeling rough, dry and the build-up of dead skin cells can result in excess oil and clogged pores, leading to blemishes and acne. Exfoliating removes the barrier of dead skin cells clogging the skin and uncovers fresh new cells below and deep cleanses. This opens the way for products to work more deeply into the skin, which makes them more effective. In short, a regular exfoliating routine will leave your skin looking fresh and healthy. “How often should I be exfoliating?” is a question I often get asked and I would always recommend twice a week; there is no need to do more as this will only over-irritate the skin and cause more problems.

Men should exfoliate prior to shaving as this will help with ingrown hairs and I would always recommend to follow with an application of a facial mask.
