A must-read before you fly…
Most of us are pretty clued-up about basic skincare rules. Yet when it comes to going on holiday, not only are the weather conditions usually more extreme, but the propensity to relax so much that you throw you usual regimen out the window, means that the risk of making skincare mistakes can increase dramatically.
So, before you head out from your hotel or reach for that Piña Colada, give yourself the quick once-over and skip these common skincare mistakes…
You skip your upper lip:
This is not an area that most of us focus on when thinking about sun protection. But you know those little lines that can appear sometime around your forties and make your lipstick bleed? As with all signs of skin ageing, sun exposure is one of the primary causes. And the reason we don’t usually get less lipstick bleed on the lower lip, is that the shape of the lip creates a small but significantly protective shadow. The moral of the story? Make sure you don’t miss your upper lip line when applying SPF or a lip balm containing sunscreen.
You forget about being in the car:
Again, not something we all think about when we start fantasising about holidays. But experts who use skin imaging technology to check the extent of sun damage will often see that one side of the face (the one that’s nearest the window) is more marked than the other according to which seat we usually sit in. So, when you hop in that hire car, make extra special care to apply and re-apply SPF to the side closest to the window and those UV rays.
You neglect your head:
So, your face and body are well and truly covered in SPF - but you haven’t even thought about what’s going on up top. Often in direct sunlight, the scalp is particularly prone to getting burnt. An unhappy scalp makes for unhealthy hair, so be sure to mist on an SPF spray that’s designed to protect and condition your scalp and hair throughout your holiday.
You skip exfoliation:
If you want an even glow (even wearing SPF will allow your skin to tan a little), make sure you start exfoliating several times a week before departing for your holiday. You’ll remove dead skin cells on the surface and create the smooth canvas you need to look radiant, not dull and patchy.
You make yourself a magnet for mosquitoes:
Having beautifully smooth holiday skin all over means staying free from unsightly red bites. Yet certain things that we do as a matter of course could contribute to mosquitoes being attracted to our skin from up to 50 metres away. Heavily scented (especially rose) body gels, shampoos and moisturisers can all increase your chances of being bitten. So, when packing for your holiday, pick products with little or no scent for nighttime.
