Peptides

29th September 2017

I was recently talking to a client after her facial and recommending our 'beauty Sleep in a bottle’ Peptide 4 Night Recovery Treatment Cream-Oil when she sheepishly asked me, “Keeley, I don't want to seem stupid, but what exactly is a peptide?

As a beauty therapist I’m often guilty of slipping into autopilot and forgetting what these fancy names actually mean to you at home. Today, I’ll provide a simple answer to my client’s question.

The skin is made up of proteins and amino acids – these are the building blocks that are responsible for skin health and ageing. Peptides actually have the same chemical structure as proteins but are shorter in length. They’re often attached together in chains of amino acids, and when a chain contains 8 amino acids it is known as a Hexapeptide. Think of it like a necklace, where the beads are the amino acids and the chain is the peptides.

The particular peptide I would like to talk about is the Hexapeptide, which is the key ingredient in our much loved Pro-Collagen Oxygenating Night Cream. When collagen in the skin breaks down, the peptides in this product send signals to the cells, alerting them to amp up production. So the Hexapeptide in this product is tricking the skin into thinking that it has lost collagen and needs to make more.

Another product that harnesses the power of peptides is Pro-Collagen Super Serum Elixir. In this product we use Matrixyl Peptide, a 5-chain amino acid. These peptides are telling the skin that all constituents of the skin matrix need to set to work, stimulating collagen production, elastin and glycosamoglycans to slow the tell-tale signs of ageing.

The final product I simply have to mention when talking about peptides is our truly amazing Peptide 4 Night Recovery Treatment Cream-Oil. As the name suggests, this Peptide has 4 amino acids in the chain. The formulation works to replenish and renew the skin – and what better time to do this than at night, when the body is already in renewal mode. As the day draws to a close, this unique transformative texture is smoothed over the skin, and the exquisite aroma of exclusive Night Scented Stock gently seduces, ensuring you wake up with well-rested skin, no matter the quality of your night’s sleep.

So hopefully you now know how to use peptides to better nourish your skin. These remarkable formulations, combined with other groundbreaking ingredients, make ELEMIS the brand it is today and my chosen brand to work with for the last 18 years.
