The Art of Monoi

Frangipani Monoi has become a scent inextricably linked to ELEMIS. A heady, soulful aromatic oil that encapsulates the ELEMIS sensorial journey both in texture and scent. But the journey begins long before the evocative scent and rich texture reaches your skin as making Monoi oil really is a true art.

The idea behind Monoi is made up of two elements: mo (mō) is a concept which refers to the state of civilisation, the cultivating of untamed nature. The second term noi (no'i) refers to the notion of mixing, mingling, coming together. When we blend the two words we have Monoi (Mōno'i), the name given to the famous perfumed oil whose legendary and authentic preparation involves ancient and ancestral ritual together with precious and highly sought-after ingredients.

This traditional beauty product combines just two ingredients - Coconut and Tiare flowers – and has been used for centuries establishing itself as part of Polynesian heritage.

The base of Monoi is created by pressing the dried kernels of ripe coconuts to make oil. The kernels are left to dry out in the sun on the coral atolls of the azure Pacific Ocean before being pressed.

Tiare – also known as Tahitian Gardenia - is a small shrub in the Rubiaceae family which flowers all year round. Its regular snowy-white flowers stand out in contrast with the dark green of its glossy, smooth-edged leaves. The emblem of Tahiti, Tiare possesses a unique perfume, both powerful and soft, which immediately enchants.

Monoi is made by soaking the Tiare, hand-picked before the blossoms open their petals, in the Coconut oil which has been refined for two to three weeks. On the islands, It is used daily for the whole family. Mothers like to anoint their babies with it after a bath to protect them from the cold and keep their skin soft, and brides coat themselves from head to toe in preparation for their special day.

ELEMIS takes the formulation a step further by adding the petals of the Frangipani flower to the already sublime Monoi oil, creating an extra layer to the fragrance that lulls the senses with its warm tropical notes.

With the Frangipani Monoi range you can turn your daily morning shower into a heavenly treat as you envelop your body with the truly luxurious Frangipani Monoi Shower Cream. Once out of the shower (or bath), dry off and apply the award-winning Frangipani Monoi Body Oil or Frangipani Monoi Body Cream (or both for total indulgence!). Specifically formulated to give your hands and nails some TLC, Frangipani Monoi Hand & Nail Cream leaves hands beautifully scented, deeply moisturised and replenished for long lasting comfort. When you’ve got some ‘me’ time pencilled into the diary, try lavishing your skin with Frangipani Monoi Salt Glow. It melts on contact and scrubs aways dead skin cells with mineral rich Salts and Hibiscus to cleanse and exfoliate, whilst that famous exotic infusion of Tahitian Monoi oil and Frangipani flowers seals in moisture. Leaves the body soft to the touch and feeling nourished, and of course, skin is left delicately fragranced with that lovely signature scent.
