Summer is leaving us and soon the winter nights will be drawing in, so just as we would change our summer wardrobe and replace our thinner clothes with knitwear our current skincare will need a few changes and additions. The key to winter skincare is extra moisture. Humidity levels tend to drop off in the autumn and winter months. The drier the air, the more moisture it sucks from your skin, so you're more likely to experience dryness and flakiness during the colder months of the year. This then leaves the skin with a lacklustre and parched appearance.
To help avoid your skin drying out, place a few bowls of water on or near your radiators when you switch on the central heating. This will create moisture in the air when the water evaporates. I also like to add a few drops of my favourite essential oils to fragrance the air. As always, don't forget to drink lots of water to maintain hydration levels. The key changes to your routine no matter what your skin type would be introducing Pro-Collagen Super Serum Elixir under your moisturiser as it contains a cocktail of anti-ageing actives combined with Hyaluronic Acid and omega-rich Camelina oil, providing superior moisturisation and hydration. If you have been using Pro-Collagen Marine Cream for the past few months I would swap it for Pro-Collagen Marine Cream Ultra Rich which has the addition of two natural oils to give the skin that little extra nourishment without overloading the skin.
The constant change in temperature will also be affecting the skin. Going from the cold outdoors into warm centrally-heated buildings and vice-versa can causes the capillaries to contract and expand rapidly leading to broken veins and skin redness so I would invest in some S.O.S Emergency Cream. With its Avocado wax base it has been designed to give that added protective barrier to the skin and is also an intensive daily moisturiser formulated to soothe sensitive and dry skin while replenishing skin’s hydration levels. It can be used on its own or mix 1-2 pumps with your Pro-Collagen Marine Cream day or night.
It’s also important to regularly exfoliate your skin at least twice a week so your hydrating products can get to the fresh skin cells, and always follow up with a facial mask. I like to use Exotic Cream Moisture Mask as you can even sleep in this mask and it’s a true pleasure to use. Taking the Chi-energy of the plant, this dynamic synergy of Mimosa and Honey Absolute, with extracts of Sea Rocket, Orange and Bergamot leaves the skin exceptionally moisturised and enriched, delivering an intense hit of hydration.
The final area we need to look at is our diet as the winter encourages comfort eating and we are less likely to fill up on vegetables and fruit like we do in the summer. For many people with oily, acne-prone skin, the drier weather can actually help with breakouts, reducing flare-ups. But autumn/winter comfort eating might have the opposite effect. Studies suggest that diets high in refined carbs may trigger or exacerbate acne. Foods with a high glycaemic index (GI) spike sugar which is thought to increase the levels of hormones in the body that are responsible for oil production. Superfood Facial Oil, the latest addition to the ELEMIS range, will help ensure that your skin is receiving the vital nutrients it needs with its natural blend of highly concentrated superfoods that deeply nourishes and hydrates. Anti-oxidant and omega-rich oils from Broccoli, Flax Seed and Daikon Radish feed the skin, helping to plump and smooth. Lightweight, non-greasy and easily absorbed, this oil will leave your skin balanced with a healthy, radiant glow. Apply 1-2 drops onto a cleansed and toned skin before your moisturiser or use on its own in the morning. You can even add it to your face mask for deep moisturisation and ultimate skin health.
Say ‘hello’ to happy, hydrated winter skin.
